Why free speech?

I’m really enjoying So To Speak, a free speech podcast from F.I.R.E.. I listened to one today that was an interview with Georgetown Law professor Louis Michael Seidman, who sounds very Left and unusually skeptical about free speech — hardly the typical podcast guest for F.I.R.E.

But I learned a few things, including what’s meant by the liberal charge that conservatives have “weaponized free speech” (it’s not so vacuous as it sounds) and, more importantly, that we free speech advocates had better learn to argue why free speech is good, because the days of saying “free speech is in the Constitution, so we don’t have to go beyond that” may be coming to an end — sooner in the court of public opinion, later followed by the courts (who famously “read the election returns”).
