“I grew up gay in Indiana,” the even-keeled Mr. Buttigieg says in a stock line when asked about the topic. “I’m not afraid of bullies.”

I’m tired of Buttigieg using Indiana (and Mike Pence) as punch lines. This in particular is a fundamentally dishonest line: Buttigieg grew up in the closet, not openly gay in a way that would attract bullies even if Indiana were an icon of gay bullying as he implies.
Is Buttigieg self-loathing about his homestate?
