On the one hand, it’s hard to find a group that professed sola scriptura or even nuda scriptura that didn’t constantly justify itself from tendentious readings of Christian history; OTOH, their historical exegeses were no more persuasive to others than their scriptural exegesis.
The back-and-forth over slavey in Christian history is particularly telling.
I have thoughts about how Orthodoxy stands outside all this, but that’s (maybe) for another day.
