If you were going to create in a lab a crisis that would test Trump’s weaknesses the most … this pandemic seems to be tailor-made.
The actual virus itself is completely immune to any sort of bluster — unlike a foreign dictator, unlike a foreign foe, unlike a domestic political foe, unlike a mayor, a governor, whatever — totally immune to political bluster. The response to it requires an incredible degree of organization, and the civil society aspect of it requires consensus-building.
So you had to have consensus-building, you had to have expertise, you had to have organization to combat a foe that was totally immune to political pressure, and I can’t think of a challenge less-suited to Trump’s skill-set.
